Adrian
Theodoor Peperzak in his book “The Quest for Meaning: Friends of Wisdom
from Plato to Levinas” discusses about the relationship with culture and
faith. He speaks about its compatible and incompatible elements. He states rightly
that it is not clear about how much of our faith can go well with the culture
of the prevailing time and place. Just because an institution became one with
our culture and we can not live without it that does not mean that certain
elements in our culture is true or right.
From
time to time Christians were forced to adjust with the prevailing sicknesses of
the time, some times with their realization some times without. The recent war
of words against the consumeristic culture and capitalism brings to light such
a difference in our present time. However, just like culture brings something
new to faith so also faith to the culture. While this continuous journey of
interaction proceeds one must not forget to provide that which is essential to
Christian life beyond the boundaries of culture, country, and language. It is
impossible for Christians to live as if secluded from the rest of the world. One
should assimilate it and turn it into Christian theory and practice.
